Gordon & Macphail Glen Grant Rare Vintage 1954

Style: Sweet and Dignified
Rating: ☆☆ [Highly Recommended]
Nose:
Amber grapes slipping on a thick leather jacket, ginger spice surprisingly vibrant at this age, at this strength. Dark, deep resonating sweetness. Complex malt slowly unwinding, milk chocolate, marzipan and vanilla dripping raisin syrup. Impeccable aroma, smooth and glistening without a single wrinkle. Stunning.
Palate:
Gentle touchdown as raisins advance gracefully with a hint of purple bubble gum. Deep, archaic layer of leather, polished oak and wood cabinet. Fried figs and walnuts intercepted by dry ginger in mid way. Over to the other side, the onslaught of oak begins, dryness of timber leads the tone, polished wood, resin, pine fragrance and dark chocolate go all the way to the back. Garden berries malt surfaces, calm and composed with a few brushes of sultanas to finish.
Finish:
Ruby grapes rise again, a touch of vanilla on dense malt syrup. Tannins, earthiness sliding under, dry but satisfying.
Thoughts:
Thoughts: The oldest whisky I have ever tasted thus far. Time has definitely worked wonders on this whisky, sherry, oak and spirit have perfectly melded together. Towards the end probably the oak has taken the upper hand but drinking this you can feel there is an endless flow of flavours coming through with tantalizing sweetness. Not so many distillery can pass the test of time and Glen Grant, no doubt has reached the summit with pride. Absolutely beautiful at this staggering age.
