Kavalan Solist Fino Sherry Cask

Style: Delicate Sherry and Complex

Rating: ☆☆ [Highly Recommended]

Nose:

An acidic overtone misting over a slim, lightly copper-ironed sherry nose. Rich toffee layering the foundations, bright green plums dipped into brown sugar and sided with dry five-spices on top. Black peppercorns, chili shreds powdering on red liquorice. A sharp and focused aroma.

Palate:

Streamlined muscovado sugar, raisins and prunes again balanced nicely with copper contact. Followed by milk chocolate which is nicely warmed up and beautifully weighted in the middle. Moving on we have another layer of fluffy honeyed fruits. A thin cut of peppermint followed by animated, fragrant green apples and mangoes that gives the sweetness a cheerful nudge. Molasses fuses with chilli flakes, lip-smacking creamy malt and lightly charred oak towards the end.

Finish:

Delicate sherry makes a comeback while more milk chocolate manifests at the end. Soft floral and dry, copper tones to finish.

Thoughts:

Thoughts: A very healthy and lively Kavalan we have here. I feel it has benefited from the lean and drier style of Fino sherry cask (on the other hand, Oloroso sherry is not sweet at all, right?) and it has produced a nice balance of sherry and coppered spice. It allows complexities with all the elements able to cast their spells at ease. Very intelligently made whisky.
