Nose:

A delightful warmth of malt and peat rises gently from the glass. The aroma unveils a distant bonfire, kelp, and lemon candies, forming a crust of sweetness, while deeper notes of rich orange citrus and brine sit at the core. It’s decidedly sugary overall, with burnt sugarcane, earthy undertones, and mineral hints adding complexity. Layers of tar, balsamic vinegar, and tobacco leaves unfold, with a subtle red chili kick at the tail. Surprisingly smooth and gentle for its cask strength.

Palate:

The initial impression is of citrus and sugary sweetness, beautifully counterbalanced by a relatively assertive chili spice. Lime, grapefruit, and assorted citrus peels evolve into notes of liquorice, shredded coconut, crème brûlée, and nutmeg, with a touch of mint adding brightness. The peat smoke is intricately woven into each layer, creating harmony. Toward the back palate, oak emerges alongside a bright sprinkle of white peppermint. The journey concludes with espresso accented by a dash of brine.

Finish:

The finish begins on a bitter note, reminiscent of spent coffee and oak, before transitioning back to citrus and tropical fruit highlights. Hints of red fruits emerge delicately at the very end.

Thoughts:

Deceptively sweet at first glance, this Lagavulin reveals much more complexity and depth upon closer inspection. Its softness and tenderness are surprising, especially considering its age—21 years is not especially old, and at natural cask strength, one might expect a bolder profile. Yet, this expression doesn’t mirror the robust style of Lagavulin 12 CS. Instead, it strikes a fine balance, with just enough power to sustain an intricate exploration of its nooks and crannies. Delicious and well-balanced, it’s a remarkable showcase of the gentle facet of Lagavulin.
