Ledaig 2009 Aged 10 Years Bordeaux Red Wine Cask Matured

Nose:

Fresh cherry pie next to a crackling bonfire, immense, big aroma filling up at the front. Cod oil and light barbeque char, Ledaig’s peat signature expressed in a more subtle and refined manner. Cooked tropical fruits and kumquat forming multiple levels of fruitiness. Glazed lemon fused with some fisherman’s friend. Slowly the peppermint spice gathers momentum and forms a solid backbone with the remaining components hinging on it. Very nice.

Palate:

Massive entrance, an explosion of cherry-led multiple fruits at the front, closely followed by diesel oil and intense spice. The fruits are further sweetened and edging closer towards confectionaries territory. Maritime smoke fired up in the air and diffuses through the expression. Squid ink coating on minerals, wet moss and pebbles. Chocolate mousse and salted caramel slice plated around cured meat. More dark cherries rolling back in just as the malt makes a quiet entrance. A final herbal rush to give a strong ending to it.

Finish:

Cherries, dark liquorice and mint chocolate flowing, sweet and calm.

Thoughts:

Robust, deliciously sweet and well-structured. The wine influence leads the charge and sorts out the distillate beautifully while leaving adequate room for side notes to manifest. An almost flawless execution and ticks all the boxes you would expect from a 10 year old Ledaig, Possibly underrated, for me, this is close to 2 stars.
