SMWS 29.234 Laphroaig “Smoked and Salted Toffee Apples”

Style: Fruity, Smoky and Vibrant

Rating: ☆☆ [Highly Recommended]

Nose:

Sticky caramelized apples, pulled pork, honeycomb and frozen raspberries on the nose. Green peppermint garnished on top. Sea salt ingrained into the dense sweetness. Subtle citrus notes, smoked almonds, tar and mineral notes painting on the barley. Sweet and vibrant.

Palate:

Smoked plums and apples building on an increasingly prominent citrus edge. Chocolate cherry, fragrant figs, blood oranges scatter around the lemon slices, abundantly fruity. Green herbs high notes, barbeque smoke and roasted coffee beans paving the way for the Laphroaig iodine signatures. Honey rolling back with some baked fruits. Delicious.

Finish:

Chocolate marshmallows, smoked apricots and cherries laying on top of a soft, grassy bed. Sweet and fresh finish.

Thoughts:

What a pleasant sherry-sweet and fruity Laphroaig we have here. Rich, complex and surprisingly vibrant, that is very impressive for a 27 years old Laphroaig as some of them tend to fall off quite a bit once they go beyond 25 years. It has found the perfect coordinate in terms of cask, distillate and maturation, harvested at just the right time. Majestic dram.
